HFCS – The “Dirty” Word In Our House…

why-is-high-fructose-corn-syrup-bad-for-youFor those of you that know me personally, you know that I am pretty blunt about sharing my disdain for certain things. HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) is probably one of the highest on that list. The commercials that the corn industry are now plastering all over the public media in order to save what is left of their “pennies on the dollar” substitution for God created food, frankly, make me want to scream! (sometimes I do! 😉 )

“It’s all natural because it comes from corn.” “Your body doesn’t know the difference between HFCS and sugar.” Give me a break! Should we maybe consider vodka healthy and natural because it’s made from potatoes!? As for the latter…the video below will give you the truth of the matter as to how the body REALLY breaks down things such as glucose and fructose. They should really post the science behind how the body works when making their claims…oh wait, that would send everyone running in the other direction!

They can fight it all they want, the research is there (unless conducted by the organizations that have a specific agenda)…and COMMON SENSE is the most driving factor for me. God didn’t make it! Man did. There are many other “sweet” things that He created. If we can find God created things that serve the same purpose…why would we not default to them? I would think it would be clear to us that He probably knows better than we do. 😉

Adding yet another block in the wall against HFCS, I learned something else today that I didn’t know before. I discovered there have been several studies that have found MERCURY in HFCS! One of the articles that I read was from the Washington Post, January 2009.

“Mercury is toxic in all its forms. Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered. We are calling for immediate changes by industry and the [U.S. Food and Drug Administration] to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of the food supply,” the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy’s Dr. David Wallinga, a co-author of both studies, said in a prepared statement.

“the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP), a non-profit watchdog group, found that nearly one in three of 55 brand-name foods contained mercury. The chemical was found most commonly in HFCS-containing dairy products, dressings and condiments.”

Wow, another fun thing to add to the list of why I won’t eat this stuff. I won’t even go into all of the studies that I have read that site that HFCS is potentially as addictive as several illegal drugs!  Like it or not, people are hooked…I’m just glad that I jumped that ship when I did.

Okay, I’ve ranted enough. I know that not everyone shares the same opinion, and that’s fine…all I know is what I read and what my gut tells me…and for me, it says STEER CLEAR! So yes, in our house, HFCS is the dirty word! 😛 Nothing crosses through the door with that in the label unless someone else is bringing it in and ingesting it.

This movie is a great breakdown for those of you that want “professional” proof of how this stuff really works in the body…and why HFCS, and not fat, is a bigger contributor to the obesity epidemic that is sweeping the nation. It’s a bit lengthy, but for those of us who are really digging deep into this stuff, totally worth watching! 😉

Just for curiosity sake…if you are not a label reader…go to your fridge and your pantry. Take a gander at the labels on all of your boxed goodies, canned stuff, condiments, etc. and leave a reply listing all of the things that you find that contain HFCS. Better yet, if you’re like me and don’t consume the stuff, next time you are at the store make a small mental list of some common everyday things that contain it…and share them with us. Maybe we can get a list going in the comments to make it easier for people to recognize the foods that are better off avoided 😉
