“Orange Julius” Ice Cream

10 - Paleo orange julius ice creamI had an intense craving for an orange julius a couple of days ago. I have no idea why. I hadn’t had one since high school. tee hee. 😛 I thought it was kind of an odd thing to be desiring, but thought I’d be able to figure something out, none the less. 😉

So with a little brainstorming, I was able to come up with this super easy recipe that will make even the toughest critics a fan. My sister very much detests avocados, but she LOVED this ice cream!

It’s a great way to satisfy a sweet craving without having to add any “sweet.” 😉

You will need…

1 - ingredients

  • 3/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 whole vanilla bean
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 2 to 2 1/2 large frozen bananas

First, put the orange juice into your Vitamix or other high speed blender container.

2 - OJ

Then you are going to slice your fresh vanilla bean in 1/2. Put your knife on a slight angle and drag towards you across the length of the vanilla bean to scrape out the seeds. Throw them right into the blender container with the orange juice.

3 - scrape vanilla bean 2

Next, cut your avocado in 1/2 and remove the seed. Slice it into 4 or 6 chunks while still in the shell. Use a large spoon to scoop out the chunks and add them to the container with the OJ and vanilla bean seeds.

4 - scoop avocado

Last, section up your frozen banana a bit and add it to the container with the rest of your ingredients. The blender could totally do this for you, but I find that I get a quicker blend and  a more desired texture by doing it this way.

5 - chunk frozen banana

Don’t forget to use your tamper, you will want it for this.

7 - dont forget tamper
Start by just turning the power on the lowest setting, letting it chop up the banana chunks for a few seconds. Then slowly increase the speed to 10, and flip it on high…..JUST UNTIL IT STARTS TO BLEND TOGETHER SMOOTHLY WITHOUT THE TAMPER. Then quickly turn it off, you don’t want to overheat it and melt your ice cream. 😉

When it’s all done, it should look something beautiful, like this. 😀

9- beautiful cream
The original recipe that I made, I only used the 1/2 avocado. However, when I made it this afternoon, I threw the whole one in…it was amazing! Same great flavor, just added even more creaminess! Loved it!

And there you have it! And it’s even a bit GREEN! Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day! What a coinkidink! 😉

Anyone else willing to take the avocado challenge and give this a try? My sister was sure glad that she did! You will be too, Promise! 😀
